2013 US Retailer Of The Year

Outdoors Inc. - Memphis, TN

Outdoors Inc. was founded in 1974 when Joe Royer and Lawrence Migliara combined their two paddling businesses, West Tennessee White Water Supply and South Central Canoe Base, into The Great Outdoors. At the time, Joe and Lawrence were avid paddlers and racers who could not find performance outdoor equipment in Memphis. The first retail location opened in the spring of 1974. During the first few years of business, Joe and Lawrence concentrated on selling performance paddling equipment.

After a successful trip to Ranier Mountaineering School, Joe and Lawrence decided to start carrying climbing and camping equipment. They then changed the name to Outdoors Inc. Soon after, following a few seasons of unusual regional snowfall, Outdoors Inc. began carrying snow ski equipment and apparel, and sponsored the first ever Cross Country Ski races in Memphis’ own Audubon Park. In the early 1980’s, Cycling was added to our outfitting repertoire.  Over the next decade, Outdoors Inc. expanded into a new warehouse and added retail stores in Memphis and Jackson, TN. Outdoors Inc. continues to be the only Ski and Snowboard retailer in West Tennessee.

Today, we at Outdoors Inc. continue to provide Memphis and the Mid South with quality gear for outdoor enthusiasts of all types. We hope to provide our customers with high quality equipment and apparel to enhance their outdoor activities, while promoting long term relationships with customers by offering impeccable service beyond expectation. We believe that a high quality product that retains its performance and aesthetic appeal for many years is more environmentally responsible than one that must be replaced frequently due to inferior materials or poor quality workmanship.

We provide a workplace for employees that encourages honesty, fairness, respect for others, compassion and integrity.

In 2014, Outdoors Inc. celebrates its 40th Anniversary of being the Mid-South’s premier locally-owned and operated Specialty Outdoor Retailer, with 5 retail locations and a growing online sales presence.

Outdoors Inc. continues to strive to serve the community through events that encourage respect and care for the environment, and to improve the quality of life of those in its community. 2014 marks the 33rd year we have hosted the Outdoors Inc. Canoe and Kayak Race on the Mississippi River, and the 29th year for the Outdoors Inc. Cyclocross Championship, which is the longest running Cyclocross race in the Nation.

Outdoors Inc.’s main office and distribution center is located at 610 National Ave., Memphis TN 38122. We can be contacted at (901) 324-2506, online at www.OutdoorsInc.com, or e-mail CustomerService@OutdoorsInc.com.

Joe, Lawrence, and the entire Outdoors Inc. team would like to thank SIA for recognizing us with such a great honor and distinction!

"The SIA Snow Show is the best time of the year! You get to see all the new technology coming out, you get to see all the sales reps you have relationships with, and then right around the corner you get to test everything out at the On-Snow Demo at Copper." Katy Graul, Ski Brokers, Fraser, CO
"For me, the Show is so much more than just a product presentation, it's a true breeding ground for ideas and inspiration. The forums, the marketing information, and the opportunities for retailers like me to network with each other has become a major feature for me." Teddy Schiavoni, Summit Ski Shop, Framingham, MA
"It's the place to go to see as many manufacturing companies as you can see under one roof at one time. It’s the latest and greatest of everything that’s going to be coming through the stores in the next six to eight months. I think people do a disservice to themselves by not going." Susan Woody, sales rep, Turtle Fur
"This Show is so important because it's the preview for what’s to come; it's the big picture. You can talk to the people that are in sales, product development, we can tell you plans for next year as well as help retailers with their buy so they become informed and make better decisions for their business." Ryan Green, Nordic Division Manager, Rossignol
"From an international perspective, I can see that the whole US snow sports industry is truly a community. Everybody's here and you can see that it's a family." Sigi Rumphuber, Product Designer/Engineer, G3
"This whole business is based on relationships, so if you don’t get that face to face time it's difficult to continue those relationships or build new ones. And of course we have to be at the Show because it gives a chance for everyone to see the full line, and to talk about any problems or potential opportunities." Josh Roberts, VP, Nitro Snowboards
