Denver, CO (February 1, 2014) -- Day Three of the 2014 SIA Snow Show (Jan. 30-Feb. 2) had a relaxed, weekend feel about it with parties, concerts and people catching up with friends inside and outside the Colorado Convention Center. The snow sports industry is famous for knowing that working hard and playing hard go hand-in-hand.
“Where else can you have hundreds, if not thousands, of your favorite people in a single building? Knowing we're all slammed during the day, early evening receptions are the way to go,” commented Robert Yturri, SVP of Global Sales, product and brand management, Obermeyer.
"We’ve got friends from different companies that we catch up with while we’re here and we look forward to that, but so far we’ve kind of been going with the flow. It’s not hard to find the fun," said Kara Gabriel and Agatha Lugowski, buyers for Big White Ski Resort in Colona, BC.
“I’d like to say all of our great ideas come from hard core planning meetings, but many times they come from discussions at the bar with friends,” commented Eric Carlson, VP of product and design at Smith Optics.
During last night’s 3rd annual Icelantic’s Winter on the Rocks, at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, hip-hop legends Jurassic 5 took the stage for their first Colorado show in eight years. Also co-heading the event was Ghostland Observatory, who played to a packed crowd.
“A light snow on Thursday night provided just enough for us to deploy our social shoveling strategy where we offered free tickets to the first 100 people to help shovel,” said Annelise Loevlie, Icelantic Skis VP of Marketing. “People were pumped, the music was great and Mother Nature reminded us all of how good a wintery night with good friends can be.”
The other hot ticket last night was the 15th annual TransWorld SNOWboarding Riders' Poll Awards at the Odgen Theatre. With Emcee’s Preston Strout and Jack Mitrani at the helm, top riders were recognized for the best in individual progression and style, while filmmakers were awarded for excellence in their video projects. This year’s TransWorld SNOWboarding Legend Award went out to Bryan Iguchi recognizing his lifetime of commitment and contribution to snowboarding.
A late night out with friends did not stop a huge crowd from gathering for the OIWC’s Keynote Presentation & Leadership Awards at 7AM today. During the breakfast, OIWC announced Laura Fergusson, Arc’teryx as the recipient of the First Ascent award and Kathy MGuire, K2 the Pioneering award winner. Following the awards, Kelly Davis of SIA hosted a panel discussion entitled The Money Stash: Uncovering the Economic Future of the Snow.
One of panelist, Anne-Marie Dacyshyn, VP of marketing for Burton Snowboards, joked with the audience: “The secret to capturing a woman’s heart is three more hours of sleep.”
The panel discussion focused on the women’s market – the most significant and profitable opportunity in the snow industry today. Industry veterans discussed data showing growth and potential, advertising messages and ways to empower women in the snow sports.
“We need to mentor and invest in female employees and help them see all their career opportunities,” commented Krista Parry, founder of Snowmamas.com.
Over in the Convention Center’s lobby, SOS’s 5th Annual Youth Summit celebrated those within the industry that impact the lives of thousands of youth every year with keynote speaker Kevin Pearce, founder of Love Your Brain. SIA President David Ingemie provided opening remarks and SOS Executive Director Arn Menconi, highlighted 330 adult mentors, Nicky DeFord of Vail Resorts Echo and the team at Chaos Headwear. Both Nicky DeFord and Chaos Headwear were recognized with the Social Impact Award in Youth Development.
“We were thrilled with the turnout this morning and attention to making a difference in the lives of youth and promoting passion for snow sports in the next generation. The industry plays a huge part in our program through their sponsorship and in-kind donations, said SOS executive director Arn Menconi.
This afternoon, job seekers were meeting, greeting and hoping to a get a job at the annual “Shmooz” a job fair for snow sports suppliers, resorts and organizations hosted by SIA and Malakye.com, an online job networking site.
Founder of Malakye.com, Chad Mihalick, gives those looking for a job some advice. “There is no substitute for face time.” Making the Shmooz the ideal vehicle for connecting companies looking to hire those looking for work.
This evening will bring on a whole new batch of happy hours, parties, dinners and industry gatherings on/off the Show floor. One area that has been seeing plenty of social activity is the new exhibit CRAFT @ SIA, which spotlights craft brands or independent, smaller ski and snowboard manufacturers. Each evening CRAFT has been hosting happy hours featuring, what else, but craft brewed beer.
And across the hall at the Snowboarding IS… booth (#2156), Show attendees have been gathering each evening to socialize and share stories through words and art on a specially designed wall. Each evening the booth becomes a social hub as kegs get tapped to help celebrate the love of snowboarding.
