DEMOING IS BELIEVING. GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SIA TRIP – JOIN THE ON-SNOW DEMO

With 120+ brands across Alpine, snowboard and cross country, the SIA On-Snow Demo/Ski-Ride Fest is the best chance to test all of the 14/15 hardgoods side-by-side. It’s also one of the best ways to educate yourself and your employees about the products, and to streamline or fine-tune your buying process. That makes the On-Snow Demo a huge value; pair that with your $20 Registration fee, which covers lifts, meals and transportation to and from Denver, plus the fact that you’re already there for the Show, and you’ve got a big winner for your bottom line.

“For me, it’s silly to pass up the On-Snow when I’m already out there for the trade show anyway, especially when SIA pays for the transportation to the mountain,” said Joe Palaia, Snowboard Clothing Equipment and Buyer, at Buckman’s in Pottstown, PA. “The Demo also allows us to tweak the decisions on those companies that we are on the fence with. It streamlines our process and allows us to ensure that the consumer will be on a board with performance that’s comparable to what they are getting for their dollar.”

Tracy Gibbons, Co-Owner of Sturtevant’s in Bellevue, WA agreed, “The On-Snow Demo is so easy! From the transportation, food and lodging, to get getting skis right near the lift, the Demo is very easy and affordable for us to attend.”

Take a look at last year’s On-Snow Demo/Ski-Ride Fest: Insert small video box:

  • Once you’re geared up and ready to take on Copper Mountain, the Sherpa app gives you hands-free, real-time insider intelligence, across the entire mountain. The app tells you what you’re near, where to go and what to do when you get there.
  • 25% discounts on shuttles, charter vans and private car services from Denver Airport and Downtown Denver to Copper Mountain are available through Colorado Mountain Express- group discount code: SIASNOW. Complimentary WiFi and daily departures available for all vehicles. Call 800-519-9613 for more info.

Q AND A WITH BOB OLSON OF VIKING SKI SHOP: A SEASONED RETAILER KNOWS ORGANIZATION AT THE SHOW IS KEY

As you anticipate your time at the Show, we know you’re thinking about seeing industry friends and catching up while getting business done. But have you got a detailed plan? Have you mapped out your time down to the hour, or are you more of a hang-out-and-hope-for-the-best kind of person? After many years of seeing retailers have a successful Show using many different approaches, one thing we all know for sure is that a little planning and organization go a long way toward getting your goals met. To that end, we checked in with Bob Olson, owner of Viking Ski Shop in Barrington, IL, with over 40 years in business. Olson has a system for working the Show which has been successful for him over the years. Here are the highlights:

SIA: After many years coming to the Show, you’ve got your approach down to a well-oiled machine. In general, how do you organize your time at the Show?
Bob: It’s a very busy time of year for retailing, so we have to be smart about how we cover the store. I have two hard goods managers who join me on the trip to Denver on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday we go non-stop. We have appointments booked with hard good suppliers from 8am until 7-8pm.  Then my managers go home and run the shop on Saturday and Sunday. I stay and that’s when I have some time to visit the machine suppliers, look at things like footbeds, possibly attend a seminar, and get other odds and ends done. It’s also a great opportunity to talk to my reps and the sales managers of the suppliers companies. My wife is our softgoods buyer, and her schedule is similar. Sometimes it’s hard for us to both be gone from the shop like that, but I feel very strongly that it’s important to be there. There is no other place to see the product lines like you can at SIA.

SIA: How important is it to you to get that face time at the Show?
Bob: It’s very important. That’s what the business is still all about. It’s a tight knit industry and your relationships with reps and suppliers are key. I also like to take time during my appointments to learn a little bit about what direction a company is going in and get an idea of what they’re going to do in the next few seasons. It helps my future planning to have an understanding of that.

SIA: Although it’s a chunk of time away from your shop, do you think attending the Show saves you time or money in the long run of the season?
Bob: When a rep comes into the store it is costly because of the time it takes. That’s why I believe in the Show so strongly. If you go to Denver and just go non-stop, you can see a lot of brands and lines in a couple of days. In addition, I’m a big believer in demos for our staff and we try to participate in as many as possible. Because we’re coming from Chicago, it involves a flight and a hotel to get to a demo. If I can work the On-Snow Demo into their schedule it makes things less expensive and more convenient. Demos can get cost prohibitive, so this is a great way to do it.

There are many approaches to working the Show, but there’s no question that having a plan in mind helps you reach your goals. We have many ways to help, including the SIA/Show App, which has a scheduler and interactive floor plan. In addition, Suppliers can access the Exhibitor Dashboard to check sales leads and manage their information appearing in the Exhibitor Brand Search. Retailers can access the Exhibitor Brand Search, Interactive Floor Plan, or the SIA/Show App to find an Exhibitor on the floor, read press releases, keep track of exhibitors you want to visit at the show and organize sessions and appointments with your own calendar.

Retailers can also plan ahead by visiting the Curated View of Snow Sports at SIAsnowshow.com to find an overview of trends to watch for in every category. More in-depth information can be found in the Sneak Peak New Product Directory to help you get an overview of the product lines before you head to the Show.

Last but not least, schedule time for some education at the SIA Snow Show with the many seminars being offered. Highlights include SnowSports Market Overview by Category, presented by SIA Research Director Kelly Davis, and F/W 15 Color and Megatrends,
presented by Stylesight. Visit SIAsnowshow.com/seminars for the full listing.

“The Show was awesome! Tons of traffic and excitement, which we were really excited about. We’ll be back every year moving forward. We’ve gotten new business from being here, and as a launch year, it’s been absolutely great.”
Tracy Bordwell, Creative and Technical Design, Fate Clothing

"As a snow-sports journalist, I find the SIA Snow Show to be an invaluable resource. There's nowhere else I can survey all of the latest gear and get face time with interesting suppliers, retailers, athletes, and other industry movers all in one place."
Sam Bass, editor-in-chief, Skiing Magazine

“You have everyone in one place, so you can see everything you need and get an idea of where trends are going. It’s a good overview of what’s going on in the industry. Last year we picked up a couple new lines that I wouldn’t have necessarily picked up had I not gone to SIA. The Show gets you psyched.”
Jim Slanetz, Owner, Board Bin, ID

“From our standpoint, our line has gotten larger each year, and the exposure at the Show is huge. There are so many people here and this Show seems to grow every year, it’s really beneficial for our sales reps to be here.”
