Backcountry Experience

Backcountry Exhibit

The Backcountry Experience exhibit returned to the 2014 SIA Snow Show floor with educational seminars, industry professional appearances and Q & A’s. The exhibit featured over 60 companies, visualizing the story of backcountry to both retailers and media, making it truly an interactive experience.

Today’s backcountry comes in many different shapes and sizes, with everything from lift-accessed backcountry to hut/yurt multi-day adventures. The BC Experience focused on what it takes to outfit consumers with the best in backcountry hardgoods and accessories while delivering the “Must Know” of safety information and protocol. This gave attendees, backcountry buyers and media the chance to see AT products and splitboards, along with beacons, poles, probes, shovels, skins, backpacks and airbags all in one place.

Backcountry Experience showcased:

  • Splitboards/Powder specific (boards, boots, bindings)
  • Freeride Backcountry (skis, boots, AT bindings)
  • Backcountry Touring (skis, boots, bindings, AT, Tele)
  • BC Accessories (beacons, poles, skins, ascension skis, ski crampons, probes, shovels, avalanche bags, packs, etc.)
  • Snow Safety/Education

Each day ended with a happy hour and safety seminar which focused on that one thing that makes each backcountry excursion a true experience... POWDER! Whether splitboarding, alpine touring, skiing or hiking a boot pack, once you step beyond the boundaries, you are on your own. Knowledge and equipment went hand in hand here. Each day our backcountry experts were on-hand to share their insight on topics such as: Proper Route Finding, Gear Selection, Beacon Basics, and Avalanche Warning Signs.


The Marketing of the Backcountry
Join brands and athletes and filmmakers for an open discussion on marketing the backcountry: is it a good idea to be selling this idea of fresh tracks? And if so, how can we also effectively teach education and consumer responsibility alongside all the ads of pretty photos of the backcountry?

Steep Life Protocols
Steep Life Protocols empowers skiers, snowboarders, and other mountain travelers including cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and snowmobilers, to stay safer by avoiding avalanches through practical terrain management techniques.  This means traveling smartly and sensibly in the mountains by implementing sound protocols, including:

1. Using the 3 Strikes methodology to gauge risks, make sensible decisions, and know when to call it off; for example:
    •  New snow and high winds overnight = Strike 1
    •  Poor communication and lack of team-group emphasis = Strike 2
    •  Signs of natural avalanche activity and no safe zones = Strike 3
2. Assessing snow pack from the top down including digging quick pits on the go
3. Sticking to apexes including ridges, hips, and spines
4. Avoiding convex and concave terrain; unsupported slopes; terrain traps; and steep to flats
5. Maintaining constant visual-verbal communication with partners
6. Traveling safe zone to safe zone until totally clear of potential avalanche paths

Avalanche Safety Messages... Now and into the Future
AIARE will bring SIA members up to speed on the current and future trajectory of avalanche safety messaging in the US.  Specifically, we'll investigate avalanche awareness messaging in use today, a status update on Project ZERO, and the implications on avalanche safety messaging for retailers and manufacturers.
